COMMENT

Moving forward? I don’t think so. Just two weeks ago I predicted that the Federal election would finally put some certainty back into the economy and let business get back to focusing on growth. Unfortunately the national result leaves us with continued instability via a minority government that may well be hand-tied and unable to introduce its full raft of policies.

Commiserations to outgoing Federal Member, Kerry Rea and congratulations to Ross Vasta, who returns as our representative for Bonner. The Chamber will continue to lobby strongly on behalf of local business to have government look seriously at the issues facing small and medium business in this region.

On a positive note Brisbane City Council, ANZ and Port of Brisbane have become major sponsors of the Wynnum Central Cup which precedes the Wynnum Spring Festival in October. Over the coming weeks I will announce all sponsors whose contributions will ensure it is professionally run and will become a Wynnum showcase event for the local community in coming years.

Also, the Wynnum Manly Jazz Festival will be staged on Father’s Day, Sunday 5th September. This is the “first cab off the rank” of bayside festivals and I urge all locals to get into the swing.

CALLING VOLUNTEERS & SPONSORS

The Wynnum Central Cup Day event on Saturday 9th October will attract a big community turn-out and we are anticipating a very busy time for organizers, performers and support volunteers. Planning is well advanced and community interest has been overwhelming.

We are also pleased to announce that Brisbane City Council and Port of Brisbane have already confirmed as major sponsors and others are soon to be secured. A full list of sponsors will be posted on this website in due course.

You can be part of this exciting family-fun event by either volunteering your services or becoming a sponsor.

Call Melinda or Pete on 3893 2628 for further information.

SMALL BUSINESS SOLUTIONS – Back to Basics

There are only two places left on our Certificate IV, Back to Basics program in Small Business Management. The program which includes a 3 hour Business Health Check and 5 x 3 hour workshops would normally cost $1200 per participant, however the Chamber is subsidising each participant to the tune of $1000. BOOK now to ensure your place.  Call Pete Baines on 3893 2628 for a full outline and booking details.

BUSINESS BREAKFAST – Wednesday 15th September

Our previously advertised speaker for this event was Senior Sergeant Rod Shelton of the Fraud Squad but he will now be unavailabe due to an overseas assignment. So we are now pleased to bring you Mark Edmondson who, unfortunately was unable to appear at our previous event. But he’s back on the field and ready to turn in a performance that will resonate with everyone in attendance. Mark is an elite Personal Coach with clients around Australia. Before embarking on this career he was a star International Super League player with St Helens and England.

Also appearing will be newly elected federal member for Bonner, Ross Vasta who will give his views on how a brittle minority government might be able to deliver outcomes for local business. This should be most interesting.

We recommend you book early to avoid disappointment.
